जूलियस सीजर ड्रामा सेक्सपियर ने जहाँ से शुरू किया वहां तक पहुचने से पहले हम यह समझने की कोशिश करेंगे कि सीजर कौन था ? उसकी इतनी दुखद हत्या क्यों की गई? आम आदमी उसके बारे में क्या सोचता था? यह सब समझने के पहले हमें रोमन इतिहास को समझना होगा!
रोम की स्थापना लगभग ७५३ ई०पू० रोमेलस और रीमस नामक व्यक्तिओं द्वारा की गई! रोमेलस ने रीमस की हत्या कर दी तथा अपना राज्य स्थापित कर शासन करने लगा! इस तरह रोम पर राजशाही स्थापित हो गई, धीरे रोम विस्तृत होने लगा रोम के राजाओं ने अपने आसपास के राज्यों पर आक्रमण कर उन्हें जीतना शुरू कर दिया! रोम के शासक जिस राज्य को जीतते थे उसमें लूटपाट नहीं करते थे, अपितु जीते हुए राज्य के लोगों को अपने साथ ले ले जाते थे! जो सैनिक बनने योग्य होते थे, उन्हें सेना में भर्ती कर लिया जाता था! शेष लोगों को निमार्ण आदि कार्य में लगादिया जाता था ! इस तरह बहुत जल्दी ही रोम की सैनिक छमता बहुत अधिक हो गई!
रोमन साम्राज्य बहुत शक्तिशाली हो गया! सैनिक शक्ति के साथ निर्माण कार्य में लगे लोगों ने रोम को एक सुन्दर नगर बना दिया! धीरे-धीरे जीते राज्यों से लाये गये लोगों की संख्या रोम बासियों से भी अधिक हो गई, रोम के लोग उन्हें गुलाम बनाकर रखते थे! अब इन गुलामों की संख्या इतनी गई थी कि रोम दो वर्गों में विभाजित हो गया! एक अभिजात्य वर्ग तथा दूसरा निम्न वर्ग ! धीरे-धीरे लोग राजशाही से त्रस्त हो गये! तलगभग ५०९ ई०पू० रोम में गणतंत्र में स्थापना की गई जिसमें एक सीनेट तथा कई अन्य पदों निर्माण किया गया! जिनमें सबसे प्रमुख पद कोसुल था! जिस पर दो व्यक्तियों को एक वर्ष के लिए चुना जाता था! एक व्यक्ति केवल एक ही बार कोंसुल रह सकता था! जनरल, और कई जज बनाये गये!
रोमन्स ने कई युद्ध लड़े जीते तथा अपने साम्राज्य का विस्तार करते रहे! रोम का कार्थेस से युद्ध हुआ कार्थेस पूर्वी अफीका का हिस्सा था! रोम ने कार्थेस को तीन बार हराया वहां के लोगों को बड़ी संख्या में गुलाम बनाया इस तरह रोमन साम्राज्य विश्व के बहुत बड़े भूभाग पर फ़ैल गया और प्राचीन इतिहास का सबसे बड़ा साम्राज्य बन गया!
साम्राज्य विस्तार के साथ ही रोम का सीनेट भ्रष्ट होने लगा अधिकतर सीनेटर भ्रष्टाचार में डूब गये! अभिजात्त्य वर्ग निम्न वर्ग पर अत्याचार करने लगा ! सेनेटर अपना हित देख रहे थे! रोमन्स से किसी को सरोकार नहीं था! अब लोग शासन से त्रस्त हो चुके थे! धीरे-धीरे लोगों का गुस्सा बड़ने लगा और उसने एक आन्दोलन का रूप ले लिया लोग सत्ता पलटने के लिए तैयार हो गये!
सत्ता पलटने में स्पार्टा ने मुख्य भुकिका निभाई ३०० गुलामों का संगठन तैयार किया गया! यह तीन सौ लोग अपने आप में एक आर्मी थे हर योद्धा एक सेना के बराबर था! स्पार्टा ने रोम पर आक्रमण कर दिया! भयानक मार-काट के बाद स्पार्टा ने रोम पर अपना अधिकार कर लिया! परन्तु कुछ समय के बाद रोम की सेना में जनरल के रूप में पोम्पी और क्रेसस का पदार्पण हुआ! इन दोनों ने स्पार्टा को न सिर्फ हराया अपितु बहुत ही क्रूर तरीके से क्रास पर चड़ाकर मौत के घाट उतार दिया! इसी समय लगभग 12 जुलाई 100 ई०पू० में गॉयस सीजर और आरेलिया के घर एक पुत्र का जन्म हुआ जिसका नाम रखा गया 'जुलियस सीजर' गॉयस अभिजात्य वर्ग से आते थे , तथा रोमन राज्य में उनका सीधा दखल था!
जन्म के बाद सीजर थोड़ा बड़ा हुआ तो उसको शिक्षा और काफी कठिन प्रिशिक्षण के लिए बाहर भेज दिया कठिन अभ्यास के बाद सीजर एक बहादुर और शक्तिशाली योद्दा बन गया ! परन्तु 16 वर्ष की आयु में ही उसके पिता का देहांत हो गया ! इस तरह सीजर पर अपनी माँ और बहन की जिम्मेदारी आ गई! तभी लगभग ८४ ई 0 पू० में सीजर की शादी कार्नेलिया से हो जाती है! जिससे जुलियस सीजर को एक पुत्री जूलिया का जन्म होता है! परन्तु उसी समय कोर्नियस सूला सिविलवार में जीत जाता है! क्योंकि सीजर का परिवार सीविल वॉर का हिस्सा था! इसका परिणाम सीजर को भी भुगतना पड़ता है! सीजर को कैद में डाल दिया जाता है! परन्तु सीजर एक शक्ति शाली परिवार से था इसलिए उसके काफी शुभचिंतक थे! किसी तरह उसे कैद से निकालकर रोम से बाहर भेज देते है ! परन्तु रास्ते लुटेरे सीजर को बंदी बना लेते है! किसी तरह लुटेरों को फिरोती देकर सीजर को आजाद करा लिया जाता है! लेकिन सीजर उन लुटेरों को मरवा देता है!

जब सीजर रोम वापिस आता है तो उसे पोम्पी के विरोध का सामना करना पड़ता है जिससे रोम में फिर ग्रहयुद्ध छिड जाता है क्योंकि सीजर ने अपनी एक मजबूत सेना तैयार कर ली थी! जिसका सामना पोम्पी की सेना नही कर पायी और उसे बहुत बुरी हार का सामना करना पड़ा! हारने के बाद पोम्पी रोम से भाग गया! उसने इजिप्ट में जाकर वहां राजा टालेमी-13 के यहाँ शरण ले ली!
पोम्पी की हार के बाद रोम पर सीजर का पूरी तरह अधिकार हो गया अब उसका कोई विरोध करने बाला नहीं था! इस तरह सीजर ने रोम पर अधिकार करने के बाद सारी शक्ति अपने हाथ में ले ली! रोम का सीनेट भ्रष्ट हो चूका था! अधिकांश सीनेटर सिर्फ अपना हित देखते थे! आम रोमन्स से उन्हें कोई मतलब नहीं था रोमन्स भी सीनेट पर लगाम चाहते थे! सीजर ने सीनेट के अधिकार कम करके खुद को सत्ता का केंद्र बना लिया, रोमन्स सीजर के पक्ष में थे! लेकिन कुछ सीनेटर इसके खिलाफ थे परन्तु वे सीजर का मुकाबला नहीं कर सकते थे! सीजर ने अपनी शक्ति का प्रयोग कर कई बदलाब किए और वह पूरी तरह तानाशाह बनकर उभरा तथा रोम पर शासन करने लगा! लेकिन उसका शत्रु पोम्पी अभी जीवित था यह सीजर के लिए ठीक नहीं था!
सीजर पोम्पी को किसी भी हाल में जीवित नहीं छोड़ना चाहता था! अंतत: सीजर इजिप्ट की ओर अपनी सेना लेकर कूच कर गया! सीजर ने इजिप्ट को घेर लिया लेकिन राजा टालेमी- 13 ने सीजर को अपने महल में आमंत्रित किया जब सीजर राजा से मिलने गया तब राजा द्वारा पोम्पी का सिर सीजर को भेंट किया गया! जिससे सीजर काफी दुखी एवम क्रोधित हुआ! सीजर को राजा से इस व्यवहार अपेक्षा नहीं थी! वह पोम्पी को इस तरह नहीं मरना चाहता था अपितु वह उसे युद्ध में पराजित कर दंड देना चाहता था!
सीजर अपने विश्रामगृह में विश्राम कर रहा था! तभी उसने एक साये को अपने कक्ष में आते देखा जब वह साया उसके निकट आया तो उसने देखा कोई व्यक्ति अपने आप को पूरी तरह एक लिबास में ढके हुए है! जब उस व्यक्ति ने अपना आवरण हटाया तो सीजर के होश उड़ गये, जैसे एकदम बिजली कोंधी हो सीजर मंत्रमुग्ध हो एकटक उसे देखता रह गया! उसे कुछ समझ नहीं आ रहा था कि वह क्या करे! बड़ी मुशिकल से उसके मुख से निकला -"कौन ......हैं आप?" तब जैसे कोयल की कुक सी सुनाई दी -"मेरा नाम क्लियोपेट्रा है!" उस साये ने खनकती हुई आबाज में कहा - "मैं राजा टालेमी की छोटी बहन

मार्क अंटोनी एवं ब्रूटस सीजर के जीवन में अलग महत्व रखते थे! वह दोनों को ही अपने पुत्र की तरह प्यार करता था! मार्क अंटोनी सीजर का सबसे विश्श्नीय व्यक्ति था! उसने कई युद्ध सीजर के साथ लड़े दूसरा व्यक्ति ब्रूटस था जिस पर सीजर सबसे ज्यादा विश्वास करता था! ब्रूटस रोमन्स एवं रोम को प्यार करता था उसकी जिदगी में सीजर की दोस्ती का बहुत महत्व था! लेकिन रोम एवं रोमन्स उसे सबसे पहले थे! ब्रूटस ऐसे परिवार का सदस्य था जिसके पूर्वजो ने रोम में लोकतंत्र स्थापित करने में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई थी! ब्रूटस नही चाहता कि रोम का लोकतंत्र खतरे में पड़े और रोमन्स को किसी की गुलामी करनी पड़े, चाहे वह उसका मित्र सीजर ही क्यों न हो!
सीजर के इस तरह निर्कुश शासन से उसके कई विरोधी उसके खिलाफ साजिश करने लगे! उनमें मुख्य रूप से केसियस था जो सीजर का सबसे बड़ा विरोधी था वह किसी भी कीमत पर सीजर को मारना चाहता था! उसके लिए उसने उन लोगों का एक समूह तैयार किया जो सीजर खिलाफ थे , उनमें एक 'कास्का' भी था! केसियस जानता था, ब्रूटस के बिना उसकी सीजर को मारने की योजना सफल नहीं हो सकती! इसलिए वह कुछ झूठे पत्र ब्रुट्स के पास भेजता है जिनमे रोमन्स ब्रूटस से निवेदन करते है कि वह उन्हें सीजर के शासन से मुक्ति दिलाए उन्हें सीजर की गुलामी से मुक्त करे!
सेक्सपियर का ड्रामा अब शुरू होता है जब सीजर पोम्पी के पुत्रों को जीतने के बाद रोम वापिस आता है! सीजर के लौटने पर एक बहुत बड़े जश्न का आयोजन होता इसी जश्न में मार्क अंटोनी सीजर को ताज पहनने की कोशिश करता है! लेकिन सीजर ताज पहनने से मना कर देता है और कहता है-"मुझे ताज नहीं चाहिए मैं तो बस सीजर ही बनकर रहना चाहता हूँ, मुझे बस रोमन्स का प्यार चाहिए!" इतना सुनने के बाद चारों ओर से 'सीजर-सीजर' की आबाज आने लगती है! तभी केसियस ब्रूटस को एक और खींचकर ले जाता है! तथा कहता है-"देखा ब्रूटस रोमन्स सीजर के लिए कितने दीवाने हो रहे है जबकि वह आपके आगे कुछ भी नहीं है! फिर भी सारे अधिकार उसके पास हैं वह दिन दूर नहीं जब वह पूरी तरह तानाशाह बन जायेगा और सारे रोमन्स उसके गुलाम होंगे! वह कमजोर है बीमार है आपकी तरह बुद्धिमान भी नहीं है फिर भी शासन की कमान उसके हाथ में है!" तभी कास्का आता है और कहता है- "देखा केसियस किस तरह अंटोनी ने सीजर के सिर पर ताज रखा! आज तो उसने मना कर दिया लेकिन एक दिन वह ताज पहनकर रोम और रोमन्स दोनों को अपना गुलाम बना लेगा!"

| '15 मार्च आपके लिए ठीक नहीं' -ज्योतिषी की भविष्य वाणी |
जश्न के दौरान चारों ओर से सीजर-सीजर की आबाज आ रही थी! तभी सीजर का ध्यान एक आवाज़ ने अपनी ओर खींच लिया! वह एक ज्योतिषी था जो जोर-जोर से चीख रहा था-"सीजर -सीजर हाफ मार्च को ध्यान रखना वह आपके लिए ठीक नहीं है, आपकी जान को खतरा है!" सीजर उसकी अवाज को अनदेखा करके फिर जश्न में डूब जाता है! थोड़ी देर बाद उसे चक्कर आते हैं और वह जमीन पर गिर जाता है उसका शरीर झटके खाने लगता है वह वेहोश हो जाता है!
सेक्सपियर के ड्रामा के पहले सीन के अनुसार एक भयानक रात है ! आसमान में बिजली चमक रही है तूफान के साथ हवा चल रही है अजीब डरावनी रात है! तभी नाईट ड्रेस में सीजर प्रवेश करता है! और कहता है-"आज स्वर्ग और पृथ्वी कही भी शांति नहीं है! केलिफोर्निया दो बार चीखकर कह चुकी है 'सीजर' को बचाओ- सीजर को बचाओ !" तभी उसका नौकर अन्दर आता है जिससे सीजर कहता है-तुम चर्च जाओ और प्रिस्ट' से पूछकर आओ आज का दिन हमारे लिए कैसा है! नौकर चला जाता है तभी सीजर की पत्नी "केलिफोनिया अंदर आती है' और सीजर से कहती है-"सीजर आज क्या आप बाहर जाने की तैयारी कर रहे हैं? मैं आज आपको बाहर नहीं जाने दूंगी, मुझे आज बहुत डर लग रहा है!" तभी सीजर कहता है-"क्या बात करती हो क्या तुम्हारे डर की बजह से सीजर बाहर नहीं जायगा?" "नहीं मेरा यह मतलब नहीं है! मैं जानती हूँ आप नहीं डरते! कलिफ़ोर्निया ने समझाते हुए कहा-"मुझे डर इसलिए लग रहा है! आज मैंने बहुत बुरा सपना देखा है !" कलिफोर्निया उस बुरे सपने के बारे में बताते हुए सीजर से बोली -'" मैंने आज जो सपना देखा वह बहुत ही भयानक था, एक शेरनी ने रोड पर अपने बच्चों को जन्म दिया है, असमान में घोड़ों के हिनहिनाने की आवाजें आ रही हैं हजारों योद्धा युद्ध लड़ रहे है! जिसके कारण रोम की राजधानी खून से लाल हो गई है !" सीजर कहता है-"क्या मैं एक सपने के डर से सीनेट न जाऊ? वह सीजर जिसने अनेकों युद्ध बिना डरे लड़े क्या वह एक सपने के डर से वाहर नहीं जाएगा?" केलिफोर्निया कहने लगी - नहीं मैं यह नहीं कह रही कि आप डर कर वाहर न जाएं अपितु मैं डर रही हूँ, मेरी खातिर वाहर न जाए! सीजर केलिफोर्निया की बात किसी भी हाल में मानने को तैयार नहीं होता, वह उसे समझाने का प्रयास करता है -"देखो जो होना है वह होकर रहता यदि मेरे साथ कुछ गलत होना होगा तो होकर रहेगा उसे टाला नहीं जा सकता यह नियम सब पर लागु होता है!" तभी केलिफोर्निया कहती है-"सीजर एक भिखारी, आम आदमी की मौत का संकेत आकाशवाणी द्वारा नहीं होता सीजर आप आम इन्सान नहीं है इसलिए मुझे यह संकेत मिल रहे है!" सीजर कहता है -डर और मैं दो शेर हैं! क्यूंकि मैं डर से पहले आया हूँ इसलिए मैं डर से भी नहीं डरता अपितु वह मुझसे डरता हैं!" केलिफोर्निया सीजर के आगे घुटने के बल बैठ जाती है कहती है-"सीजर आप किसी से मत कहना की आप डर रहे हैं आप कहना मेरी पत्नी के डर रही थी इसलिए आप सीनेट नहीं आये! मैं मार्क अंटोनी से कह दूंगी वह सीनेट में जाकर कह देगा आजआप बीमार हैं!" क्या सीजर डर के कारण झूठ बोलेगा? वह बीमार है?" तभी सीजर का नौकर चर्च से वापिस आता है! सीजर नौकर से पूछता है-" प्रीस्ट ने क्या कहा मेरे आज के भविष्य के बारे में?" नौकर कहता है-"मालिक प्रीस्ट ने कहा है आज आपके जीवन को खतरा है आज आप वाहर न जाएं! .......................................
