एकलव्य और गुरु द्रोण

     महाभारत के अधिकांश पात्र किसी प्रतिज्ञा या बचनों से बंधे थे! तो कुछ मात्र अपनी प्रतिज्ञा के लिए ही जीते रहे !या यह कहें कि यह कथा ही बचनों की कथा है तो यह कहना गलत नहीं होगा!   महाभारत के सभी पात्रो का कुरुक्षेत्र में आना और महायुद्ध का होंना इन्हीं  बचनो का परीणाम था! ऐसे ही बचनों से द्रोण भी बधे हुए थे, जैसे राजगुरु बनते ही ह्स्तानापुर को बचन दिया कि वह उसके प्रति हमेशा निष्ठावान रहेगें! दूसराः बचन अर्जुन से प्रभावित होकर दिया कि उसे भारतवर्ष का सर्वश्रेष्ट धनुर्धर बनाएगे!

    बात जब गुरु द्रोण की हो और एकलव्य का वर्णन न हो तो यह उसका अपमान है क्योंकि बिना एकलव्य की बात किए गुरु शिष्य परम्परा की बात करना बेमानी है! क्योंकि जब भी अर्जुन का नाम आता है तो एकलव्य चेहरा स्वयं  ही सामने आ जाता है! अब आप जानना चाहेगे कि

खिर ये एकलव्य था कौन? तो आपको बता दें कि एकलव्य का वर्णन महाभारत के अतिरिक्त हरिवंश पुराण एवम विष्णु पुराण में मिलता है! 

    हरिवंश पुराण के अनुसार एकलव्य  के बचपन का नाम अभ्य्धुम्न था जिसे अभय के नाम से पुकारते थे! कहते हैं यह श्री कृष्ण के चाचा देव्स्र्वा का  पुत्र था! परन्तु कुछ ज्योतिष गणनाओं  के कारण  श्री कृष्ण के कहने पर इसे सृंगबेरपुर के राजा हिर्न्यध्नु को दत्तक पुत्र के रूप में दे दिया था!जब बालक अभय बड़ा होने लगा तो उसकी प्रतिभा उभर कर सामने आने लगी उसे गुरुकुल में जो भी सिखाया जाता वह उसे तुरंत ग्रहण कर लेता और धीरे -धीरे    वह धनुर्विद्या में भी पारंगत होने लगा!अभय का यह गुण देखकर उसके गुरु  बहुत प्रसन्न हुए तथा उसका नाम एकलव्य रख दिया!  एक दिन पुलक मुनि ने एकलव्य को अभ्यास करते  देखा! पुलक मुनि राजा हिर्न्य्धाणु से बोले -"हे राजन आपका पुत्र एक महान धनुर्धर बनेगा, परन्तु इसे एक महान गुरु की आवश्यकता हे!" पुलक मुनि के विचार जानकर राजा प्रसन्न होकर बोले- हे मुनि श्रेष्ठ  वे महान गुरु कौन हैं एवम् कहाँ  निवास करते हैं!" राजा की अधीरता देख मुनि बोले -"हे राजन अधीर होने की आवश्यकता नही है! वे इस समय हस्तनापुर में हैं तथा कुरु राजकुमारों को विद्यादान दे रहे हैं !" इतना कहकर पुलक मुनि अपने गंतव्य की ओर निकल गये! हिर्न्यध्नु एकलव्य को एक महान धनुर्धर कैसे बनाये इस पर विचार करने लगे! 

        द्रोण  आश्रम में अपने शिष्यों को धनुर्विद्या का अभ्यास करा रहे थे! तभी निषाद राज ने एकलव्य को लेकर आश्रम में प्रवेश किया! द्रोण कुछ समझ पाते इससे पहले ही वे उनके चरणों में बैठ गये तथा निवेदन करने लगे- " हे गुरू श्रेष्ठ मैं अपने पुत्र के लिए आपसे विद्यादान मांगता हूँ! कृपा कर मुझे कृतार्थ करें!" द्रोण ने निषादराज को उठाया तथा उनके कंधे सहलाते हुए बोले -" हे राजन मैं आपके पुत्र को विद्यादान अवश्य देता परन्तु इस समय मैं कुरू वंश का राजगुरु नियुक्त किया हूँ इसलिए  मैं कुरु राजकुमारों के अतिरिक्त किसी अन्य व्यक्ति को अपने आश्रम में शिक्षा प्रदान नही कर सकता! अत: हे राजन मैं आपसे छमा चाहता हूँ आप अपने पुत्र को किसी अन्य गुरु के पास ले जाइए!" निषाद राज हिर्न्यध्नु  ने उदास मन से एकलव्य देखा और द्रोण को प्रणाम कर आश्रम से बाहर की ओर जाने लगे! 

    आश्रम से बाहर जाने के बाद एकलव्य अपने पिता से बोला - " हे पिता श्री आप जाईये मैं  गुरु द्रोण से शिक्षा लेकर ही वापिस आऊंगा निषाद राज हिर्न्यध्नु ने उसे समझाने का बहुत प्रयास किया अपतु वह माना नही और द्रोण के आश्रम की ओर भाग गया! 

    प्रात:काल के समय जब द्रोण सभी शिष्यों को अभ्यास के लिए प्रतीक्षा कर रहे थे तभी उन्हें अहसास हुआ कि सामने झाड़ियों में कोई है द्रोण ने धनुष उठाया एवं उसे देखने निकल पड़े! झाड़ियों के पीछे एकलव्य छुपा था ! उसे इस तरह छुपा देख अचंभित रह गये! एकलव्य को इस तरह छुपकर बैठा देख द्रोण को क्रोध आ गया और वे क्रोधित होकर बोले- इस तरह छुपकर क्यों बैठे हो? क्या चोरी की इक्छा से मेरे आश्रम में मेरी आज्ञा बिना प्रवेश किया है!" एकलव्य एकाएक इस तरह द्रोण के सामने आने पर घबरा गया! परन्तु विनम्रता से बोला- "गुरुदेव मुझे छमा  करें मैंने आपकी आज्ञा के बिना आश्रम में प्रवेश किया! परन्तु मैं आपसे शिक्षा  ग्रहण किए बगैर नही जा सकता मैंने अपने पिता को बचन दिया है!" एकलव्य की बात सुनकर द्रोण का क्रोध और अधिक बड गया वे क्रोध में बोले मुर्ख बालक में तुझे अपना शिष्य कभी नही बनाऊंगा, तू इसी समय आश्रम से नही गया तो तुझे कठोर दंड झेलना होगा! एकलव्य हाथ जोडकर बोला -"गुरू देव इस समय तो मैं जा रहा हूँ ,क्योंकि मैं आपको नाराज नही कर सकता परन्तु आपको बचन देता हूँ एक दिन आपको अपना शिष्य मानने के लिए विवश कर दूंगा!" द्रोण एकलव्य का आत्म विश्वास देखकर एक गहरी सोच में डूब गये तथा एकलव्य को आश्रम से जाते हुए एकटक देखते रहे! एकलव्य का आत्म विश्वास देखकर द्रोण कुछ चिंतित दिखाई दिए ! कदाचित वे सोच रहे थे कही ये बालक उनके बचन को पूरा करने में बाधा तो नही बन जाएगा, कही यह अर्जुन से अच्छा धनुर्धर तो नही बन जायगा? द्रोण का डर स्वाभाविक था क्योंकि एक मात्र अर्जुनं ही था जो उन्हें अपने प्रतिशोध की ज्वाला को शांत करने में सहायता कर  सकता था! 

    एक दिन द्रोण अपने शिष्यों के साथ वन विहार पर थे! उनका श्वान भी उनके साथ था! घने वन में श्वान कुछ दूर निकल गया तथा दूर जाकर वह भोंकने लगा, द्रोण एवम उनके शिष्य उसके भोंकने की दिशा में बढने लगे कुछ देर बाद श्वान के भोंकने की आवाज बंद हो गई! एका -एक आवाज बंद होने से सब चिंतित हो गये तथा आवाज ही दिशा में तेज़ी से बढने लगे तभी सामने उन्हें श्वान दिखाई दिया जिसे देखकर वे आश्चर्य चकित रह गये ! श्वानका  मुख  वाण से भरा हुआ था, परन्तु उसके मुख में घाव का एक भी निशान नही था न  ही उसे कुछ पीड़ा हो रही थी! द्रोण अचंभित थे इतना महान धनुर्धर कौन हो सकता जो बिना चोट पहुचाये श्वान का  मुख बंद कर सकता है! वे उससे मिलने के लिए आतुर हो गये  तथा अपने शिष्यों के साथ उस दिशा की ओर बड गये जिस दिशा से श्वान आ  रहा था!

    कुछ समय चलने के बाद द्रोण ने देखा कि एक चबूतरे

तीर से कुत्ते का मुख बंद कर दिया एकलव्य ने 

पर उसकी प्रतिमा बनी हुई है तथा एक बालक उसके सामने धनुर्विद्या का अभ्यास कर रहा है! राजकुमारों ने जब उसे तरह अभ्यास करते देखा तो वे बड़ी उत्सुकता से उसके पास गये तभी एक राजकुमार ने पूछा - कौन हो तुम? क्या तुमने ही हमारे श्वान के मुख में बाण चलाए है? तब एकलव्य ने उत्तर दिया मैं द्रोण शिष्य एकलव्य हूँ! यह श्वान मेरे अभ्यास में बाधा उत्पन्न कर रहा था इसलिए मैंने इसका मुख अपने बाण से भर दिया जिससे मेरे एकाग्रता भंग न हो! उसकी बात सुनकर द्रोण बोले - "एकलव्य मैं आपका गुरु कैसे हुआ मैंने तो आपको सिक्षा दी ही नही! तब एकलव्य बोला -"छमा  करें गुरुदेव यह देखिये!" प्रतिमा की ओर इशारा करते हुए कहा -"मैं अपना अभ्यास आपकी ही आज्ञा लेकर करता हूँ आप ही मेरे गुरु हैं!" एकलव्य की बात सुनकर द्रोण दुविधा में फंस गये! कुछ सोचते हुए द्रोण ने एकलव्य से पूछा -" हे निषाद पुत्र तुम धनुर्विद्या क्यों सीखना चाहते हो? तब एकलव्य ने उत्तर दिया - "हे गुरु श्रेष्ठ मेरे पिता मगध के सेनापति हैं, मैं भी उनकी तरह ही मगध की सेवा करना चाहता हूँ!" एकलव्य उत्तर सुनकर द्रोण कुछ विचार करने लगे फिर बोले- "हे एकलव्य क्या तुम्हे पता है कि विद्या प्राप्त करने के उपरांत गुरु दक्षिणा देना  पडती है? एकलव्य बोला -" गुरुदेव मै कोई भी दक्षिणा देने के लिए तत्पर हूँ!" गुरु द्रोणाचार्य कुछ देर विचार करने के बाद बोले - "ठीक हैं अपने दायें हाथ

एकलव्य ने अंगूठा काटकर द्रोण को भेंट कर दिया 

का अंगूठा काटकर मुझे दे दो!" उसने एक पल भी विचार नही किया, अंगूठा काटकर द्रोण के चरणों में रख दिया!उसका हाथ रक्त से भर गया द्रोण की आँखों में आंसू निकलने लगे सभी राजकुमार हतप्रभ होकर देखने लगे चारों ओर सन्नाटा चा गया! 

    द्रोण ने आगे बदकर एकलव्य के कंधे पकड़ कर उसे गले से लगा लिया तथा भाबुक स्वर में बोले -" वत्स तुम धन्य हो  जब भी गुरु शिष्य की बात होगी तब तुम्हारा नाम सबसे पहले लिया जाएगा!" एकलव्य ने अपना अगूंठा दान कर करके गुरु -शिष्य परम्परा में अपना नाम अमर कर दिया लेकिन द्रोण हमेशा के लिए विवादित हो गये! कारण कुछ भी रहा हो इतिहास यही आरोप लगाता आ रहा हे की द्रोण ने अर्जुन को  सर्व श्रेष्ठ धनुर्धेर बनाने के लिए एकलव्य का अंगूठा कटवा दिया! द्रोण को समय-समय पर इसका  स्पष्टीकरण देंना पड़ा! इस विषय पर बाद में बात करते हें क्योंकि अभी द्रोण बहुत भावुक थें! एकलव्य की गुरु दीक्षा उन्हें एकलव्य को बरदान देने पर विवश कर दिया गुरू द्रोण ने एकलव्य को बरदान दिया - ' हे एकलव्य में तुझे बरदान देता हूँ जब भी गुरु भक्ति की बात होगी तो तेरा नाम सबसे पहले लिया जाएगा! यह तेरा कटा अंगूठा भी तेरे श्रेष्ठ धनुर्धर बनने में बाधा नही बनेगा! " बरदान देने के बाद वे अपने शिष्यों सहित ह्स्तानापुर की ओर लौटने लगे ! 

    अर्जुन दुखी था वह भारतवर्ष का  सर्व श्रेष्ठ धनुर्धर होने का गौरव  प्राप्त करना चाहता था!  परन्तु एकलव्य के अंगूठे की कीमत पर नही , लेकिन वह गुरुदेव से बात करने का साहस नही जुटा पा रहा था! उदास अर्जुन को देखकर द्रोण बोले -"हे अर्जुन किस विचार में खोये हो मैं  तुम्हारी कुछ सहायता कर सकता हूँ ? उदास मन से अर्जुन बोला- "गुरुदेव क्या मैं एकलव्य का अंगूठा काटे बिना सर्व श्रेष्ठ धनुर्धर नही बन सकता था ? द्रोण मुस्कराये फिर बोले - 'नही वत्स एकलव्य के लिए खुद को दोषी मत ठहरायो एकलव्य तुमसे शेष्ठ नहीं था! एकलव्य ने जो कुछ सीखा वह उसके योग्य नहीं था! उसने सारी शिक्षा मेरी आज्ञा के बिना छल से प्राप्त की वह चोरी के अतिरिक्त  कुछ नहीं था! फिर उसने मुझे गुरु माना था इसलिए गुरु दक्षिणा मांगना मेरा अधिकार था!" अर्जुन बोला- ''गुरुदेव आप कुछ और भी मांग सकते थे!" द्रोण बोले -नहीं   अर्जुन! एकलव्य इस शिक्षा का अधिकारी नहीं था! वह इस शिक्षा का दुरुपयोग कर सकता था! अर्जुन ने शांत भाव से द्रोण की ओर देखा और पूछा- " वह कैसे गुरुदेव?" द्रोण बोले - "हे अर्जुन जो योद्धा श्वान की आवाज से अपनी एकाग्रता खो दे तथा उस निरीह प्राणी का मुख बाणों से भर दे वह कितना विनाशक हो सकता है? ऐसे योद्धा सदैव धर्म की विपरीत दिशा में खड़े होते हैं!" अर्जुन द्रोण से सहमत था फिर भी एकलव्य का खून से सना अंगूठा उसे सदैव विचलित करता रहा! 

    एकलव्य अपने आपको धन्य समझ रहा था! आखिर उसे द्रोण शिष्य होने का गौरव प्राप्त हो ही गया! अंगूठा कटने बाद उसका विश्वास और अटल हो गया! अब वह चार अगुलियों से अभ्यास करने लगा! अभ्यास करते-करते वह धनुर्विद्या में इतना प्रवीण हो गया कि बड़े-बड़े धनुर्धर भी उसके सामने नहीं टिकते थे! 

    एकलव्य ने प्रण किया था कि वह श्र्ग्बेरपुर तभी वापिस जाएगा जब वह योग्य धनुर्धर बन जाएगा! अब उसके  लौटने का समय आ गया था! वह अपने राज्य की ओर लौट  गया! एकलव्य के पिता मगध नरेश जरासंध की सेना में अधिकारी थे! अत: एकलव्य भी मगध का सहयोगी बन गया! हिरण्यधनु के बाद एकलव्य राजा बन गया! एकलव्य जरासंध के प्रभाव में  था! जरासंध एक दुष्ट व्यक्ति था जिसने अनेक राजाओं को बंदी बना रखा था वह कंस का ससुर था! कंस वध के बाद श्री कृष्ण का कट्टर शत्रु बन गया तथा उसने बार-बार मथुरा पर आक्रमण किया परन्तु वह हर बार हार गया उसके बार-बार आक्रमण से परेशान होकर कृष्ण ने द्वारका पुरी का निर्माण किया और वही बस गये! 

    हरिवंश पुराण तथा विष्णु पुराण के अनुसार एकलव्य कृष्ण का चचेरा भाई था! परन्तु उसे वनवासी जीवन जीना पड़ा इसीलिए उसके मन में यदुवंशियो के लिए कटुता थी ! उसने उन्ही राजाओं से मित्रता की जो कृष्ण के विरोधी थे! या शत्रुता का भाव रखते थे! इनमे चेदी नरेश शिशुपाल, मगध नरेश जरासंध , रुक्मी, दुर्योधन आदि थे! यह सभी धर्म विरोधी एवं दुष्ट थे! एकलव्य ने न सिर्फ इनसे मित्रता की अपितु इनके साथ युद्ध में भी हिस्सा लिया! जब कृष्ण ने रुकमणी हरण उसकी इक्छा से किया था तब रुक्मी और शिशुपाल के साथ कृष्ण का पीछा करने में  सबसे आगे था! 

    महाभारत के  खल्ल खण्ड के अनुसार एक बार कृष्ण की अनुपस्तिथि में पोंडरक के साथ मिलकर द्वारका पर आक्रमण कर दिया और द्वारका की काफी सेना का विनाश कर दिया! परन्तु बलराम ने इसे परास्त कर दिया तथा इसे भाग कर अपनी जान बचानी पड़ी! लेकिन वह हार नही माना तथा बार- बार उसने द्वारका पर आक्रमण किया! एक बार उसने पूरी शक्ति से द्वारका पर आक्रमण किया और द्वारका की  सेना का काफी विनाश कर दिया! तब कृष्ण को आना पड़ा दोनों के बीच भयंकर द्वन्द हुआ तथा कृष्ण ने इस युद्ध में एकलव्य का वध कर दिया!

विनाश करने का निश्चय कर धीरे-धीरे उनका विनाश कर दिया उनमें एकलव्य भी एक था धर्म की स्थापना में वह अधर्म के साथ खड़ा था! द्रोण एवं एकलव्य दोनों ही कटुता के शिकार थे! द्रोण दुर्पद की कटुता में किसी स्तर पर जाने के लिए तैयार थे! द्रोण ने हस्तनापुर का राजगुरु बनना स्वीकार किया ताकि वह अपने अपमान का बदला ले सके इसलिए एकलव्य को शिक्षा देने से  मना कर दिया क्योकि ह्स्तनापुर मगध का शत्रु  था! वे नही चाहते थे हस्तनापुर यह कहे द्रोण का शिष्य हस्तनापुर का शत्रु है! 

    एकलव्य अर्जुन से अपनी कटुता के कारण दुष्टों के खेमे में चला गया! उसके जीवन का लक्ष्य अर्जुन से श्रेष्ट बनना था! वह अपने को सिद्ध करने के लिए ऐसे लोगों से मिल गया जो मात्र अर्जुन के ही शत्रु नही थे अपितु धर्म विरोधी तथा अत्याचार के पर्याय थे अत: श्री कृष्ण को उनको विनाश का रास्ता दिखाना पड़ा!  

    Most of the characters in the Mahabharata were bound by some vow or promise. So some keep living only for their promise! Or it will not be wrong to say that this story is the story of the children! The coming of all the characters of Mahabharata to Kurukshetra and the occurrence of a great war were the result of these children. Drona was also bound by such promises, as soon as he became Rajguru, he promised Hastanapur that he would always be loyal to him! Second: Bachan was impressed by Arjuna that he would make him the best archer of India!

    When it is about Guru Drona and Eklavya is not described, then it is an insult to him because without talking about Eklavya it is meaningless to talk about Guru-Shishya Parampara! Because whenever Arjuna's name comes up, Eklavya's face automatically comes to the fore! Now you would like to know who was this Eklavya? So let us tell you that apart from Mahabharata, the description of Eklavya is found in Harivansh Purana and Vishnu Purana.

    
According to Harivansh Purana, Eklavya's childhood name was Abhydhumna, who used to called him Abhay. It is said that he was the son of Lord Krishna's uncle Devsarva. But due to some astrological calculations, at the behest of Shri Krishna, it was given as an adopted son to King Hirnyadhnu of Sringberpur! gradually he began to become proficient in archery too! Seeing this quality of Abhay, his master was very pleased .and named him Eklavya. One day Pulak Muni saw Eklavya practicing! Pulak Muni said to King Hirnyadhanu - "O king, your son will become a great archer, but he needs a great guru!" Knowing the thoughts of Pulak Muni, the king was pleased and said - O Muni, who is the great guru and where does he reside!" Seeing the impatience of the king, the sage said - "O king, there is no need to be impatient! He is presently in Hastanapur and is giving education to the Kuru princes! Saying this Pulak Muni left for his destination. Hirnyadhnu started contemplating how to make Eklavya a great acharya!

    
Drona was making his disciples practice archery in the ashram. Then Nishad Raj entered the ashram with Eklavya. Before Drona could understand anything, he sat down at his feet and started requesting - "O best teacher, I ask you for education for my son! Please bless me!" Drona picked up Nishadraj and while rubbing his shoulders said - "O king, I must have given education to your son, but at this time I have appointed the king of Kuru dynasty, so IKuru cannot impart education to any person other than the princes in his ashram. Therefore, O king, I beg you to take your son to another guru!" Nishad king Hirnyadhanu looked at Eklavya with a sad heart and bowed down to Drona and started going out of the ashram!

    After leaving the ashram, Eklavya said to his father - "O father, you go, I will come back only after taking education from Guru Drona.

    In the morning, when Drona was waiting for all the disciples to practice, then he realized that there was someone in the bushes in front. Drona picked up his bow and set out to see him! Eklavya was hiding behind the bushes. Surprised to see him hiding like this! Seeing Eklavya sitting in hiding like this, Drona got angry and he got angry and said – Why are you sitting in hiding like this? Has Eklavya entered my ashram to steal without my permission!” Eklavya was terrified when he suddenly appeared in front of Drona like this, but politely said-"Forgive me Gurudev, I entered the ashram without your permission! But I can't go without taking instruction from you, I have given my father a promise!" After listening to Eklavya, Drona's anger grew, even more, he said in anger that I will never make you my disciple in a foolish child, if you do not leave the ashram at this time, you will have to face severe punishment! Eklavya said with folded hands - "Guru Dev, at this time I am going, because I cannot offend you, but I promise you that one day I will force you to accept me as my disciple!"Seeing Eklavya's self-confidence, Drona sank into deep thought and kept gazing at Eklavya as he left the ashram. Seeing Eklavya's self-confidence, Drona appeared somewhat worried. Maybe they were thinking that this child will not become a hindrance in fulfilling their promise, will he become a better archer than Arjuna? Drona's fear was natural as Arjuna was the only one who could help him quell the flames of his vengeance!

    One day Drona was with his disciples in the forest sanctuary. His dog was with him too! The dog went some distance in the dense forest and after going far he started barking, Drona and his disciples started moving in the direction of his barking, after some time the sound of the dog's barking stopped! Everyone got worried as the sound stopped one by one and the sound started increasing rapidly in the same direction, only then they saw a dog in front, which they were surprised to see! The dog's mouth was full of air, but there was not a single mark of the wound in his mouth, nor was he in any pain! Drona marveledWho could be such a great archer who could close a dog's mouth without hurting him! They were eager to meet him and along with their disciples went towards the direction from which the dog was coming!

    After walking for some time, Drona saw his statue standing on a platform and a boy practicing archery in front of him! When the princes saw him practicing like this, they went to him very eagerly, when a prince asked - who are you? Have you shot arrows in the mouth of our dog? Then Eklavya replied, I am Drona's disciple Eklavya! This dog was obstructing my practice, so I filled its mouth with my arrow so that my concentration would not be disturbed! Hearing her, Drona said -"How did I become your guru, Eklavya, I didn't even teach you! Then Eklavya said - "Sorry Gurudev, see this!" Pointing to the statue, he said - "I do my exercises with your permission, you are my guru. After listening to Eklavya, Drona got caught in a dilemma! Thinking about something, Drona asked Eklavya - "O son of Nishad, why do you want to learn archery? Then Eklavya replied - "O Guru Shrestha my father is the commander of Magadha, I also want to serve Magadha like him!" Drona listens to Eklavya's reply He started thinking and then said - "O Eklavya, do you know that after attaining knowledge one has to give Guru Dakshina? Eklavya said - "Gurudev, I am ready to give any Dakshina!" Guru Dronacharya said after thinking for a while. - "Okay, cut off the thumb of your right hand and give it to me!"
