यूनान के एथेन्स राज्य में सोफ्रोनिकस एवं फेनरेट निवास करते थे ! सोफ्रोनिकस एक मुर्तिकार था फेनरेट दाई का काम करती थी, यह परिवार बहुत गरीब था! 470 बि०सी 0 में इनके घर एक बालक का जन्म हुआ जिसका नाम सेक्रोटेस रखा गया! यह बालक देखने में सुंदर नहीं था!
बालक जब बड़ा होंने लगा तो उसके मन में कई सबाल उठते,जिनके जबाव वह उन तथा कथित बुदधिजीबियों से मांगता जो उस समय काफी थे! जब वह सबाल करता तो उनकी बोलती बंद हो जाती लेकिन उसका परिवार बहुत था! दो वक्त खाना भी मुश्किल से नसीब होता था! फिर पढाई - लिखाई तो दूर की बात थी ! लेकिन जब ईश्वर साथ हो तो रास्ता भी मिल जाता है! सेक्रोटेस पर उसके पड़ोसी करितो नजर पड़ी! क्रित्तो सेक्रोटेस से इतना प्रभावित हुआ की उसने सेक्रोटेस की पढाई की जिम्मेदारी अपने ऊपर लेली1 सेक्रोटेस पढाई के साथ पिता के काम में सहयोग करने लगा! पढाई करने के बाद वह देश की सेना में भर्ती हो गया! तथा पेत्रिदिया का युद्ध वह वहादुरी के साथ लड़ा!
सेक्रोटेस एथनिक के अनुसार यूनान का सबसे बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति थ1 वह बहुत बात करता था! वह तथा कथित विद्वान जो उस समय बहुत अधिक थे! वह उनसे प्रश्न करता ईश्वर, राजा, प्रशासन से संबधित होते थे! सुकरात के अनुसार ईश्वर एक हे फिर हम देवी -देवताओ में क्यों ढूढते है? देश राजा से बड़ा होता हे ! राजा देश की प्रजा के हित में कार्य करना चाहिये ! प्रजा का भी कर्तव्य है कि वह देश के लिए समर्पित रहे ! सुकरात से उसके हम उम्र युवा बहुत प्र्भावित थे! वह लोगों को एकत्रित करता उनसे प्रश्न पूछता वे उत्तर देते , उतर में से फिर प्रश्न पूछता अंत में निष्कर्ष निकल आता लोग यह सोचकर खुश होते कि इसमे उनकी भी भूमिका हे!
सुकरात ने दो शादियाँ की उनकी पहली पत्नी मायार्तन जिसके दो पुत्र लप्क्रिसिस , सेफ्रोनोसस था दूसरी पत्नी ज़ेन्थिआइप इसका पुत्र मेनेच्सेनुस था! ज़ेन्थी एक गुस्सेल स्त्री थी! जो सोक्रोतेस से हमेशा झगड़ा करती रहती थी ! जब वह बहुत अधिक झगड़ा करती तो वे घर से वाहर चले जाते तो उसका गुस्सा और वढ जाता!
एक वार सुकरात घर का कुछ सामान लेने जा रहे थे! जब वे वाहर निकले तो उनके कुछ शिष्य आ गये1 वही बेठकर उपदेस देने लगे! उन्हें समय का ध्यान ही नही रहा! काफी देर होने पर ज़ेन्थी ने वाहर आकर देखा की सुकरात वाजार गये ही नही! उसका गुससा सातबे असमान पर पहुच गया उन्हें भला बुरा कहने लगी! सुकरात शान्ति से सुनते रहे कुछ नही बोले! सुकरात को शांत देख ज़ेन्थी का गुस्सा और वढ गया वह अंदर गयी अंदर से गंदे पानी की बाल्टी लाकर सुकरात के सर पर डाल दी! गंदे पानी से सुकरात के कपड़े पूरी तरह भीग गये!
सुकरात मुस्कराये एक पल शिष्यों की ओर देखा और बोले ,-देखा! ज़ेन्थी मुझे कितना प्यार करती हे में धुप में बहुत देर बैठा था इसलिए मेरा शरीर तप रहा था! उसने पानी डाल कर ठंडा कर दिया! ज़ेन्थी सुनकर अवाक् रह गयी उसे लगा था की उन्हें अब गुस्स्सा आ जायगा ! लेकिन उनकी बात सुनकर ज़ेन्थी की आखों से आंसू झरने लगे, वह फूट-फूट कर रोने लगी सुकरात शांत भाव उसे देखते रहे! सभी शिष्य धीरे -धीरे उठकर चले गये! ज़ेन्थी अब अपने पति को समझ चुकी थी! उसने फिर कभी झगड़ा नही किया!
सुकरात और आईना
सुकरात एक कुरूप व्यक्ति थे! परन्तु उन्हें आइना देखने का शोक था! वे बहुत देर तक आईने के सामने खड़े रहते और अपना चेहरा देखते रहते ! एक दिन अफलातून ने देखा सुकरात बहुत देर से आईने के सामने खड़े हें! अफलातून के मन में विचार आया गुरु जी इतना कुरूप होने के बाद भी वार-वार आईना देखते रहते हैं! क्या ये मेरे गुरु बनने योग्य हैं भी या नहीं! अफलातून को विचार मैं डूबे देख सुकरात बोले - ''तुम यही सोच रहे हो मैं इतना कुरूप होकर आइना क्यों देखता रहता हु'' अफलातून ने कहा -''आप तो सर्वग्य हैं! मेरी शंका का समादान कीजिये!'' सुकरात ने कहा - ''मैं रोज आइना इसलिए देखता हु ताकि अपनी कुरूपता अपने विचारों में न आये! अफलातून ने कहा - ''क्या खुबसुरत लोगों को आइना नही देखना चाहिए?'' सुकरात कहने लगे खुबसूरत लोगों को भी आइना रोज देखना चाहिए ताकि वह अपनी खूबसूरती अपने विचारों में उतार सकें!

Socrates and the Mirror
